I’ve played with virtually all the major putter brands – from Scotty Cameron to Ping and Odyssey to TaylorMade. I continue to search for a putter that has what I consider to be the perfect balance of feel, weight and roll. For the past 10 years, I’ve chosen to use mallet-style putters and typically add 1 or 2 to my arsenal annually. When I came across a premium direct-to-consumer putter at a very reasonable price (around $100), I had to try it.
The company is CAG Golf, and their story goes like this – after working in the golf industry for over a decade with some of the most well-known names in golf equipment, they recognized a need for a premium, quality golf products at a competitive price which is made possible by their direct-to-consumer business model. CAG offers 2 blade-style and 2 mallet-style putters as well as a 52, 56 and 60 degree wedge, all with considerable technology.
CAG Golf says this about their putters, “The patent-pending SVA SIGHTLINE technology provides true alignment verification during what we believe is the most essential aspect of the putt setup. Employed using our unique manufacturing and finishing process, the technology allows for accurate alignment to the sweet spot, reducing off-center impact in order to bring to the consumer a new introduction to premium golf clubs.”
CAG Golf goes on to say, “Intent on delivering the best golf putter for the money, we engineer and manufacture for precision and accuracy, with the head utilizing the benefits of a surface milled face. Lateral face grooves promote forward roll at impact, delivering proper release to the hole.”CAG concludes that, “Utilizing our product development and manufacturing design process, key performance elements are pre-defined and validated prior to manufacturing. MOI+ coupled with a face balanced design provides added forgiveness and stability throughout the stroke, making it one of the most advanced golf clubs for sale.”
I took CAG’s 34Five MD putter, which is their mallet-style, to my home golf course for 3 rounds of testing. I know the greens there very well and I felt that this would be a fair test. First, I spent 45 minutes on the practice green to get a feel for this putter, as it’s definitely different from the Ping putter which I’m currently using. The area where the CAG putter face contacts the ball seems to be smaller than my Ping, so I paid close attention to make center contact on every put. Also, the CAG head felt a bit heavier than my Ping putter but the Ping’s grip was significantly larger than the CAG’s.
The true test came on the course during rounds when there was a few “bucks” on the line. My group doesn’t play for high stakes so nerves weren’t an issue while testing the CAG putter . On my first round with the CAG, I actually made 2 really nice birdie putts, and overall I’d say that I putted really well. Rounds two and three were solid putting rounds as I felt confident putting on the greens; which as we know can make or break your golf round and score.
The company website is www.caggolf.com. I suggest checking out the line of CAG Golf putters and taking a look at their wedges too. Their website offers all the specific details and pricing.
Overall, The CAG 34FIVE MD golf putter did an excellent job. The Sight line was a nice feature, and the milled face offered a very nice roll on every putt. The CAG 34Five MD performed very well and I’ve continued playing with it as my putting has only improved over the time that I’ve been using it. The CAG is a “keeper”, although I do plan to upgrade to a larger grip as that is my personal preference. I rate the CAG as a solid putter at a great price. .
