Because I seem to require an energy boost after the front 9 holes, I usually carry a bag of peanuts to eat at the turn. A small bag of peanuts is an easy and convenient snack that I always carry in my golf bag. Sometimes I splurge with a hot dog at the turn, but I’m convinced that there are better ways to maintain my endurance without sacrificing nutrition.
I shy away from traditional energy bars as I don’t enjoy their taste and have found that they are more candy-like, with excess carbohydrates and insufficient protein. Setting aside my own preferences, I recently tested a nutritional bar (Chocolate Peanut flavor) that’s endorsed by a true golf legend, Ernie Els. The Els Bar is a gluten-free nutritional bar that has 10g of protein, 7g of dietary fiber, plus potassium, calcium and iron.
The Els Bar’s taste was very acceptable . . . it’s not a candy bar so don’t expect that sort of flavor. For a mid-round boost snack, the bar tasted fine. The only issue was that I left the bars sitting in the front of the golf cart tray, so they melted a bit in the heat. I would suggest keeping the bar in a cooler bag or a small sandwich bag with ice to avoid melting. NOTE: I gave a supply of Els Bars to a few fellow golfers in my group who all had similar opinions of the taste – the flavor was acceptable and the bar did result in providing a nice energy boost.
The company website is www.elsbar.com and the cost is $55.20 for a box of 24. The company is also coming out with an Oatmeal Raisin Yogurt bar soon.
Overall the Els Bar is a very good option for a mid-round snack which will help provide the energy boost you need to succeed to start your round or finish your golf round on the back nine.
